This well researched book details the history of the Midland’s alternative route to Nottingham from Kettering via Oakham and Melton Mowbray. The early chapters concentrate on the building of the Syston & Peterborough line, including the famous Battle of Saxby. The reasons for making the line part of a new north-south route are then examined, including the choice of route and construction, not forgetting the famous Welland Viaduct. Later chapters detail the decline of the line and the profitability of stations prior to closure. There is even a chapter on architecture.

The book is copiously illustrated from the resources of the Midland Railway Study Centre and many previously unpublished photographs. The appendices include a list of all the station masters along the line and two chain plan of the stations and junctions. A full index is provided. The author has a fine narrative style which keeps the story going but still bases the text on a solid scholarly foundation.
